India, the sixth-largest global chemical producer and third-largest in Asia has a highly diversified chemical sector with over 80,000 products. It’s among the top chemical exporters worldwide. As of FY24 (until Dec 2023), major chemical and petrochemical exports reached US$ 15.1 billion, highlighting the sector’s crucial role in India’s economy.
Trends in the Export of Chemicals:
In the fiscal year 2024-25, the total exports of merchandise and services from India started off robustly, with a growth of 6.88%. The exports were estimated at USD 64.56 billion in April 2024, a significant increase from USD 60.40 billion in April 2023. Specific sectors saw substantial growth as well. For instance, the exports of Organic and Inorganic Chemicals surged by 16.75%, going from USD 2.14 billion in April 2023 to USD 2.50 billion in April 2024. Similarly, the exports of Drugs and Pharmaceuticals rose by 7.36%, from USD 2.26 billion in April 2023 to USD 2.43 billion in April 2024. Furthermore, the exports of Petroleum products also saw an increase, albeit a modest one of 3.10%, moving from USD 6.42 billion in April 2023 to USD 6.62 billion in April 2024.
